Internet Radio On Your iPhone
Listening to Internet Radio
Internet radio stations stream their programs over the Internet so that you can listen
through your computer. Whether you like to catch an occasional show or have
radio streaming in the background all day, you can use iTunes to listen to your
favorite Internet radio programs.
Finding and Listening to an Internet Radio Station
When you want to listen to an Internet radio program, follow these steps:
1. In the iTunes source list, click Radio (under Library).
2. A list of genres opens.
To see the stations belonging
to a genre, click the triangle beside the genre’s name.
3. Find the station you want to listen to and double-click its name. iTunes
connects to the station and plays what it’s streaming right now. As you listen,
the Status pane displays the station’s name and a timer that shows
how long you’ve been listening.
4. When you’re done listening, click the Pause button in your iTunes controls to
stop the stream. You can also switch to a different station by double-clicking
its name.
If you want a radio show that doesn’t appear in the iTunes list, you can listen by
telling iTunes where to get the broadcast. Copy the show’s web address (it’ll look
something like this example: http://www.station.com/show/example.mp3) to your
computer’s Clipboard. In iTunes, select Advanced, Open Audio Stream. In the dialog
box that opens, paste in the show’s web address and click OK. iTunes gets the show
and plays it for you.
Listening to Audiobooks
Audiobooks are a great way to get some reading in while you’re doing something
else, like tidying up the house or making dinner. You can listen to audiobooks
through your iPod, of course, but you can also play them right from your iTunes
library.
iTunes can play audiobooks that you buy through the iTunes Store or from Audible.
com (www.audible.com). Each site has slightly different conditions for using
audiobooks:
• iTunes Store—When you buy an audiobook from the iTunes Store, you can
download it on up to five authorized computers at a time for playback, just as
with any other iTunes Store purchase. Audiobooks from the iTunes Store end
with the file extension .m4b.
To find out how to authorize and deauthorize computers to play the content you
buy in the iTunes Store, see “Authorizing Your Computer to Play iTunes Purchases”
• Audible.com—If you buy an audiobook from Audible.com, you can download
it to a maximum of three authorized computers at a time. These audiobook
files end with the file extension .aa or .aax.
Playing an audiobook is just like playing music. In the left iTunes source list, click
Books (under Library). Select the book you want to listen to, and double-click it or
click the Play button.

Managing Podcasts
Whether you subscribe to your favorite can’t-miss-’em podcasts or just listen to an
occasional episode, you need to manage the podcasts you keep in your iTunes
library. This section describes how to tell iTunes when to check for new episodes,
what to do with old episodes, and more.
Choosing Podcast Settings
iTunes gives you a lot of flexibility in how it handles podcasts. You can specify how
often it checks for new episodes, what to do when new episodes are available, and
what to do with episodes you’ve already downloaded. It’s all up to you.
To adjust your podcast settings, follow these steps:
1. In your iTunes library, click Podcasts to see a list of the podcasts you subscribe
to.
2. Select the podcast whose settings you want to adjust.
3. At the bottom of the iTunes window, click the Settings button to open the
dialog box.
4a. Make a selection from the Check for New Episodes drop-down list. You can
tell iTunes to check for new episodes hourly, daily (the default), or weekly,
4b. The Settings For drop-down list shows the podcast you selected. If you
want, you can select a different podcast. Choose Podcast Defaults if you
want these settings to apply to all your podcasts.
4c. If you want to adjust the default settings for downloading and keeping
podcast episodes, make sure the Use Default Settings check box is
unchecked. This makes the two drop-down lists beneath it active.
4d. In the When New Episodes Are Available drop-down list, choose what you
want iTunes to do when it checks and finds a new episode: download all
new episodes (there may be several if you haven’t checked in a while),
download only the most recent episode (leaving any older ones on the
site, even if you haven’t listened to them), or do nothing (wait for you to
refresh the episodes yourself ).
4e. Use the Episodes to Keep drop-down list to manage how long iTunes
hangs on to downloaded episodes. You can save all episodes, only those
you haven’t yet listened to, only the most recent episode, or up to 10 of
the most recent episodes.
5. When you’ve set things up the way you want them, click OK to put your new
settings to work.
